Your First Session

It is a good idea to arrive at your treatment wearing loose and comfortable clothing. Avoid eating in the half hour before you come, but also make sure that you’ve had enough to eat that you won’t be feeling hungry. The treatment will be very relaxing, and hunger can be a big distraction!

Also it is good to avoid alcohol, coffee or sex for 6 hours prior to the treatment, and try to arrive in a relaxed state so that you can get the most out of your session.

The first part of your treatment will consist of establishing your diagnosis or “pattern of disharmony”. There are 4 main ways of establishing a diagnosis:

  • an interview about your symptoms
  • a visual examination of your tongue, skin and eyes
  • listening to your breathing and voice
  • carefully reading the 5 pulses on your wrist

Once the examination is complete, the treatment to restore the harmony to the body, mind, and spirit will be evident. Acupuncture is the main treatment used. It powerfully moves energy through stagnant areas in the body while soothing overactive organs.

Don’t worry! The needles are very, very tiny and highly sterilized. After a few minutes with the needles in, most patients find themselves entering an incredibly relaxed state. It is in the relaxed state that the body really does its healing.

After the treatment, natural chinese herbs and/or dietary recommendations may be made to help sustain and support the healing process.

Both herbal and acupuncture treatments are customized for each patient depending on their unique constitution and symptoms. The number of treatments needed differs from patient to patient. An acute condition may be resolved with one treatment. For a complex or long-standing condition, 2 to 3 treatments per week may be recommended. For health maintenance, four sessions a year may be all that is necessary.
